Creative arts winter classes open to teens through adults
Looking for something different to do with your free time this winter? Why not express yourself in an Art or Theatre class. Creative Arts is offering new classes just for pre-teens, teens and adults. Art & Theatre classes begin the week of Jan. 22; the registration deadline is Jan. 17.

Want to work on specific art skills with your peers? The Teen Drawing & Painting Studio (ages 13+) on Wednesdays, 5:45-7:15 p.m., in Reading, offers students an opportunity to develop their skills. Students begin with drawing techniques such as line, value and composition before moving into color studies and wet medium such as acrylics.

Always wanted to learn how to work in clay? There are two adult clay class offerings this trimester. A Clay Hand Building class is offered on Tuesdays, 7-9 p.m. In this class you can create clay pieces using hand-building techniques ranging from sculpted figures to vessels with feet and handles. Wheel Throwing Studio is offered Thursdays, 7:15-9:15 p.m. Create functional pieces of your own design on our new pottery wheels.

For adults and teens ages 16+, try Basic & Intermediate Drawing. This class is offered on Mondays, 7:30-9:30 p.m., beginning students explore line, value and composition while intermediate students take the basics a step further by bringing previous experience into more finished pieces. Also for adults and teens ages 16+, Oil & Acrylic Paining is offered on Wednesdays, 7:15-9:45 p.m. Tackle the subjects that have been painted throughout history; still life, landscape and portrait.

Try out different paint handling techniques while you develop your own personal style. These classes focus on understanding what we see and how to translate subjects in a 3-D world onto a 2-D surface.

Is acting your passion? Have you ever wondered what it takes to put on a live theatrical production? How do you pick a script, decide who gets what roles and what costumes they wear. Creative Arts offers a new class that will teach you all of that. Theatre Director Angela Merrill and Art Instructor Kirsten Brown offer a Play Production class. This 14-week class meets on Wednesdays, 3:30-5:30 p.m., at the Union Congregation Church, 148 Haverhill St., in North Reading. Students will switch back and forth from on the stage to behind the stage.

Do you love improvisation? Why not take the Improv & Acting class on Wednesdays, 6:15-7:45 p.m., in Reading? This class is designed for preteen and teen actors who are looking to move beyond the basics. Through improvisation, students will learn to look deeper into a character, act without script and react quickly to their co-actors.

Did you always want to be on TV? Why not try it out? Intermediate TV Acting at RCTV is offered in collaboration with Reading Community Television on Thursdays, 4:30-6:45 p.m. Learn to develop the actor inside yourself and prepare for the on-camera experience. Students learn to operate a camera and how to edit their production while learning the differences between stage and screen acting.

Creative Arts is located inside the First Congregational Church at 25 Woburn Street, Reading. Entrances are on Sanborn Street or via the Town Hall parking lot. If you have questions or wish to register, call Creative Arts at 781-942-9600 or visit online at www.creativeartsforkids.org. Additional art, theatre and music classes are offered for all ages and abilities, ages 18 months to adult.
